Sewing in Leeds – Haberdashery and Fabric Shopping in Leeds Kirkgate Market

On our return to Leeds whilst handmaking t-shirts in Leeds Trinity (click here to find out more about our Pop-Up T-Shirt factory) we started thinking about how much D.I.Y sewing went on in Leeds and where people got their materials and inspiration. We headed to a favourite spot – Leeds Kirkgate Market – to revisit the local haberdashery and fabric businesses helping people to make the move into handmade!

Opening in 1822, Kirkgate Market has grown to become the largest covered market in Europe, and is always a bustling hive of activity in Leeds attracting over 10,000 visitors for week.

With over 800s stalls it’s not surprise that the maket is a much-loved a resource for everything DIY and handmade in Leeds! Visit at Vicar Lane, Leeds City Centre LS2 7HY  – opening times Monday-Saturday, 8am-5.30pm

B&M Fabrics Stall

This family run business have been supplying us with stretch fabric for more years than we’d like to count! They always have a friendly face and are ready to chat about projects and give great advice on what you need to do the job.

B&M Fabrics Shop

Their swanky new shop deserves a separate mention! It is easy to spot with it’s amazing huge windowed front, it’s on the edge of the market and stocks a large selection of beautiful printed cottons, a whole wall of sewing tools and accessories, with the same fantastic service that we’ve got to know through the stall.

M.K. Fabrics

This haberdashery is twinned with the knitting shop it faces, that’s a lot of experience and knowledge between them! They have all the useful tools that you would expect as well as a range of unusual craft projects to sink your teeth into. There’s not a lot you can’t find in the haberdashery – should it be for a collar or jewellery or a cushion…you’ll find a use for it! The hanging trimmings are our favourite feature.

Sewing Machine Co.

This is your technical stop! Michael can fix whatever sewing machine issue you’re willing to throw at him. They can machine embroider for you and also stock a great range of quality thread and scissors. They have helped us with MANY a machine disaster in the past, these guys know what they’re talking about.

The Sewing Basket

This haberdasher is a little gem especially if you’re looking for decorative touches. They have a wide selection of embellishments for every need.

Of course, keep an eye out for Marks and Spencer’s first market stall too – the beloved British brand first started here as a penny bazaar in 1894, and their original stall is lovingly preserved within the upper section of Leeds market.
